  • Walmart opened its new security and disaster center on August 28 — inside its Bentonville building — where meteorologists and staff track dangerous weather and other risks in the U.S. and worldwide.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • From Rogers, America’s Car-Mart Inc. completed a $172 million asset-backed securities deal — issuing $133.34 million in class A notes at a 5.01% coupon and $38.62 million in class B notes at a 6.08% coupon — on Aug. 29. The eighth ABS deal — showing strong market interest — comes ahead of an earnings report before market open on Sept. 4.  NWA Business Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • A man was fatally shot around 3:20 p.m. Friday in the 300 block of Meadow Court in Siloam Springs—police responded quickly, found him dead, and have one person in custody while they talk to witnesses.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Three African lions—Cyrus, Juancito, and Sefora—will be moved from an island resort off the coast of Honduras to Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Eureka Springs as part of an international rescue effort. The rescue will happen in October after special travel crates and veterinary checks are ready.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Arkansas AG Tim Griffin told the court that the new petition laws do not break the constitution — they are meant to stop fraud and corruption. The League of Women Voters filed a lawsuit against the state and must reply by Sept 8.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Bella Vista will hold three town hall meetings this September — 10 a.m. Sept. 15 at Metfield Clubhouse, 6 p.m. Sept. 16 at Bella Vista Recreation Center, and 3 p.m. Sept. 17 at the Police Department Training Room — so residents can ask questions about a November vote on extending a 1% sales tax to fund public safety and capital projects. Voters will decide on the tax extension with separate ballot questions, and if the first question fails, no additional projects will move forward.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

  • Bentonville is hosting the 14th annual Push2Inspire endurance race event at Trifest this weekend where athletes of all abilities will join biking, swimming and running races over 24 hours. The event, founded 15 years ago by Greg Simony to support the special needs community and raise funds for research, will start tomorrow morning at 6:10 a.m.  5 News
