COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Keith Law Group will cover adoption fees at Best Friends Animal Society’s center at 1312 Melissa Drive in Bentonville from 11 a.m. — 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday; the fee waiver applies to all pets that meet adoption criteria and may help up to 40 animals find new homes.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

CRIME NEWS

  • Benton County officials arrested five people on Sunday for battery, domestic battering, drug, firearms, and aggravated assault charges and held them Monday in the county jail with no bond set—each suspect coming from Springdale, Bentonville, Pea Ridge, or Rogers.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Families suing four school districts over a law that forces every school to display the Ten Commandments are asking to add the Conway district as a defendant—claiming the law forces religious displays that violate First Amendment rights. A federal judge already halted the law in four Northwest Arkansas districts, and if the motion is granted, the lawsuit will seek to order Conway to remove its displays.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Bentonville City Council discussed a plan to raise wastewater bills by 7% next year — and more later — to help cover rising sewer costs. The council also reviewed a proposal to modify a biker mural that has drawn local attention.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • The Arkansas governor's office announced $11.5 million in federal grants for rural infrastructure projects—Benton County will receive $1 million to extend its water line while other communities like Norfork, Whelen Springs and Oxford are set to improve their wastewater facilities. The awards are part of the Community Development Block Grant program designed to upgrade essential infrastructure in small cities and towns.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
