Good morning, Bentonville. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 11th of July.

CRIME NEWS

  • On May 25, former police chief Grant Hardin, known as the Devil in the Ozarks, walked out of the North Central Unit in Castle Rock when two employees broke rules, sparking a two-week manhunt that ended on June 6 when state police caught him near Moccasin Creek (Hardin is now held in Varner Supermax Unit).  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bentonville residents are invited to register for the upcoming Virtual Coffee with the Mayor to learn about city services such as Great Neighborhoods, the Adopt-a-Street program, the 311 Concern system, and the NW A St. Compost facility that recycles yard waste into compost. The event will also feature remarks by Spirit of Bentonville Award winners Richard and Jane Scates from Pickin' on the Square.  City of Bentonville
  • First Liberty Institute filed a friend-of-the-court brief Tuesday in support of the state and Attorney General Tim Griffin in a lawsuit that challenges Arkansas Act 573—an act requiring every public-school classroom and library to display a specific Protestant version of the Ten Commandments. The law will take effect August 5 while a multi-faith group argues it violates constitutional rights.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders and the Department of Agriculture announced $735,000 in state and federal funds will improve roads in 12 counties. Benton County will use its grant to upgrade Rocky Comfort Road by elevating one mile, installing cable mats and enlarging culverts — projects in other counties will also enhance drainage and protect water sources.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

  • Walmart in Bentonville is recalling 850,000 Ozark Trail 64 oz Stainless-Steel Insulated Water Bottles, model 83-662, after two people suffered permanent vision loss when a lid forcefully ejected from the bottle — the recall applies to bottles sold online and in stores nationwide, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that the design creates serious injury risks.  4029 News
