CRIME NEWS

  • Local law enforcement agencies are searching the rugged Ozark Mountains for fugitive Grant Hardin, who escaped from Calico Rock prison on Sunday by impersonating a law officer — officials said he may be hiding in one of nearly 2,000 caves in the area — as they use canines, drones and helicopters to track him.  5 News
  • A judge ordered a Bentonville man accused of killing his nephew to undergo a mental evaluation — the test will determine if he is fit to stand trial.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and the Bentonville Film Festival will host a conversation with longtime weatherman Al Roker on June 17 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Great Hall (tickets are $30), where he will discuss his career and introduce his new animated STEM series Weather Hunters for young viewers.  NWA Business Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Trey Reid of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission says Bentonville residents have reported black bear sightings as young males leave their mothers' territory to search for food. He adds that hunters must apply by June 1 for elk permits—an in-person drawing set for June 27 and 28—and that deer permits open on June 1 while a special duck season weekend for veterans and youth is planned for the first weekend in February after the regular season ends on January 31.  5 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bentonville added a state-of-the-art Boston Dynamics robot dog to its Bomb Squad to help disable explosives and go over stairs and open doors—equipment bought with Homeland Security grants. Bomb Squad technicians will train to use the new asset as it makes Bentonville only the second city in the state to have this kind of tool.  5 News

  • Bentonville Tigers baseball Coach Todd Abbott stepped down from his role after 25 years and will remain a teacher in the district. He earned over 350 wins and helped more than 100 players join college and professional teams — he said his focus was on building lasting relationships.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
