CRIME NEWS

  • Two teenagers from Bella Vista have been charged as adults in connection with raping two girls—another teen from Gravette is accused of raping one of the girls.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Thursday, Tom Walton and Steuart Walton announced plans for a new higher education school in Bentonville on the old Walmart headquarters property that will teach science, technology, engineering and math—official details on construction and enrollment have yet to be shared.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders honored five rural high school seniors training in welding, engineering, music, psychology and internet service tech yesterday at the Heartland Summit in Bentonville—an event attended by more than 350 people. Each student received a $1,000 grant through the rootEd Arkansas program to overcome career barriers—a move designed to link rural schools with college and career advisers.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A city street next to Dave Peel Park will be closed today from midnight to 6 p.m. for construction work, according to city officials. Southeast B Street between Southeast Second Street and East Central Avenue remains closed—parking at the park stays accessible via alternate roads—while weather or unforeseen conditions may postpone the closure.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Bentonville must spend $103 million on immediate sewer upgrades as recommended by consultants from an Olsson study — the report calls for an extra $82.8 million over the next 20 years to support future growth.  5 News
  • Bentonville is seeking residents to serve on its Planning Commission, which reviews building plans and advises the City Council on zoning matters. Applicants must live in the city, be registered voters, attend regular and special meetings, and serve five-year terms (the application deadline is May 26).  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • Heartland Forward launched the Maternal and Child Health Center for Policy and Practice in Bentonville on May 8th to boost maternal care by uniting over 120 health leaders and community groups — the center will use state plans and proven approaches to enhance prenatal and postnatal services in rural areas.  NWA Business Journal
