EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Arkansas House and Senate Education Committees are reviewing the latest public school funding adequacy report that shows gaps in funding for special education, maintenance and support staff (from surveys of superintendents and principals).   • UA System president Jay B. Silveria (formerly a lieutenant general in the U.S. Air Force) said Arkansas should be proud as he tours campuses to see how new programs are changing lives, and he plans to visit each campus every semester to keep the system thriving.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • Food inspectors found several local restaurants display food safety issues — including misplaced employee items and improper temperature controls — during inspections from Feb. 17 to Feb. 20. Some establishments had expired permits and sanitation lapses that officials say could raise health risks.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

SPORTS NEWS

  • Arkansas softball shut out Charlotte (9 to 0) in a five-inning mercy-rule game Saturday at Bogle Park, raising their record to 18 to 1 after a 4 to 2 win over Omaha earlier that day. The team closed the Invitational with a contest against Kansas on Sunday at 12:15.  The Arkansas Traveler
  • Arkansas women's basketball will face No. 16 Kentucky in the SEC Tournament first round on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Greenville, South Carolina — a rematch from a Feb. 1 contest in Fayetteville.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Arkansas Hogs defeated Omaha 4+2 at Bogle Park, improving to a 4+0 record in the Woo Pig Classic; Kailey Wyckoff hit key home runs and the team will face the Charlotte 49ers today at 5:45 a.m.  The Arkansas Traveler
